Miss Universe Organization runs Miss Universe, a global beauty pageant, every year. Across the world, many beauties take part in this international event. Here, I have thrown light on their journeys in winning this prestigious title. Winning this title requires participants to have an awareness of humanitarian causes. After all, it is the inner beauty and thinking that truly justifies a beautiful personality.

Sushmita Sen won the International beauty pageant in 1994. After that, two other Indian women namely Lara Dutta and Harnaaz Sandhu won the Miss Universe title. Let’s know about all of them in detail here.

1. Sushmita Sen 

At 18, Sushmita Sen wrote history by becoming the first person on the list of Miss Universe winners from India. Born on 19 November 1975 in a Bengali family in Hyderabad, she also won the Femina Miss India title in 1994.

After that, Sushmita was crowned Miss Universe in the same year. Evidently, she got a big boost due to this and it kickstarted her journey in Bollywood.

With immediate effect, she got work in the Hindi film industry. And she has left a mark with her impressive acting performances in many popular films.

Her famous movies are Biwi No. 1, Main Hoon Na, Filhaal, Maine Pyaar Kiya, etc. Her saree look can leave anyone stunned. Recently, Sushmita appeared in the web series, Aarya Season 1 & Season 2. And she grabbed the eyeballs with her amazing performance in the show.

In order to help the young contestants, the former Indian Miss Universe initiated I Am She – Miss Universe India in 2010. From 2010-2012, this contest helped the winners to directly take part in the international beauty contest.

2. Lara Dutta

Yes, Lara Dutta is the second Miss Universe title holder from India. She totally impressed everyone with her winning answer to a question asked by a jury.

Before her win in 2000, she won a few beauty pageants to showcase her mettle. In 1997, she was declared the Miss Intercontinental and she also won the annual Gladrags Mega model competition back in 1995.

Interestingly, Lara got a break in Bollywood in the movie Andaaz. In this project, she collaborated with the Miss World 2000, Priyanka Chopra. Because of her excellent acting, she won Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

After that, she starred in many popular Hindi films namely, Bhagam Bhag, Don 2, Partner, etc. Today, she has made her identity as an actress, model and entrepreneur.

3. Harnaaz Sandhu

Breaking stereotypes and family traditions requires great courage. And that’s what Harnaaz Sandhu has in abundance. Passionate about modeling, she participated in many beauty pageants to fulfill her dreams.

And her family’s support helped her win many titles before becoming the third Indian to win the Miss Universe title. In 2021, Harnaaz brought the glory of the Miss Universe crown back to India.

Earlier, the Punjabi girl won many beauty pageants including Femina Miss India Punjab 2019 and Miss Diva Universe 2021. As a result, she got a boost in her popularity and it awarded her a chance to act in the movies, Yaara Diyan Poo Baran” and “Bai Ji Kuttange.”

In a reply to a question by jury, she gave a winning answer by asking the youth to preserve their uniqueness. During the final, Harnaaz paid tribute to Lara Dutta and Sushmita Sen by wearing a gown with their pictures on it.

To this, both Lara and Sushita praised her for her accomplishment and kind gestures. And both Lara and Sushmita responded to Sandhu’s gown by calling it a beautiful tribute.


So, these are the winners of Miss Universe from India till now, From 1952 to the present year, this beauty pageant event is organized every year to recognize beauty with brains.

A few selected women take part in this competition to present themselves in front of the world. Since the inception of this event, a total of three Indian women have won this title. And they have made India proud with the glory of Miss Universe.
